Pictures from the Life is in the Blood (blood drive)

Life is in the Blood

Glory Reborn embarked on an exciting journey in May. We had our very first blood drive at our clinic. We partnered with the Philippine National Red Cross to help collect life saving blood. After many weeks of preparing we had four local churches represented at the blood drive and many relatives of patients enrolled in the Glory Reborn pregnancy program. Together we were able to collect 36 bags of healthy blood. We should note that more than 60 donors came to the event however many of us women were turned down due to anemia…but we tried! This event was particularly important as each month Glory Reborn has patients in need of cesarean section deliveries. Prior to undergoing surgery a minimum of
one bag of blood must be secured and at the hospital ready to be used if the need arises. By partnering with Red Cross, Glory Reborn is stocking blood that can be used for patients who would need a cesarean delivery. We look forward to continuing to partner with the local Red Cross in the future and are happy that our first blood drive at Glory Reborn was a success!

We were able to secure the first bag of blood for a first time mother who was in labor this week. Johna came to the clinic in early labor on a Friday morning. During an initial check of she and the baby it was discovered that the babyʼs heart beat had some episodes of decelerations below the normal range. As we tried to manage and continued to monitor there was not significant enough improvement of the babyʼs heart beat so we took her to the hospital where Glory Rebornʼs OB-GYN met us and ordered a cesarean section. Upon delivery it was noted that the baby boy, Kyle, had his umbilical cord pinched up against the motherʼs womb and an abnormality with his lungs proved to be quite serious. Currently baby Kyle is on a ventilator and being cared for by Glory Rebornʼs Pediatrician. We are believing that Kyle can continue to grow stronger and overcome the congenital defect. Glory Reborn would like to continue to keep Kyle under the care of our pediatrician at a private facility but would like to ask for your continued prayers. We are so thankful for having found doctors that are willing to help us save the lives of babies and mommies that otherwise would have to deliver their infants at home, perhaps in a dumpsite or in a graveyard. We are thankful for each and every little life and for the opportunity that we have, together, to bring a hope and future to them. For some itʼs through extended medical care for others its holding their hand through loss and being a shoulder to cry on, and for the moments that we share in the joy of a long awaited little miracle. We canʼt say thank you enough to each of you for being the support system to thousands of Filipino families, mommies and babies like Johna and Kyle who have found hope and help in a time of trouble. Just as Jesus has found us and brought us an eternal hope what a wonderful thing to share in a small way a practical hope to oh so many precious lives.

May is Expansion Month

A Dear Friend

We are so thankful to expand our services this month and help screen for anomalies like Kyleʼs on a routine basis at Glory Reborn. Due to your faithful donations Glory Reborn was able to purchase an additional probe for our ultrasound machine. This will allow us to more accurately assess the expected due dates and scan for anomalies for each and every one of our mommies.

May was also an exciting month for me as I was able to help a dear friend deliver her fourth baby. Having been apart of her last two deliveries I was happy to have made it back to Cebu just a few hours before she delivered another precious baby boy! Itʼs always wonderful when we have patients come back and deliver with us multiple times. I canʼt believe that the babies I helped deliver for her are already 9, 6, and one month old. My how time flies. I am so thankful to be able to be a part of such a very special moment in so many precious familyʼs lives.

Fundraising

As you know we had a recent fundraising trip to the US, and it was extremely successful. We were able to raise $19,261.65 through all of your generosity! This allowed us to purchase some much needed equipment as well as raise a good portion of our annual budget. This combined with the donations we have received up to May 1, 2010 totals to over $50,000! We are on track to meet our annual budget. We cannot express how appreciative we are for this support and we are excited about the opportunities that 2010 will bring. Glory Reborn Fundraising
As we mentioned in our past newsletters as well as our presentation, one of the key areas is growth into a new facility. We will be sharing more on this as well as creating a separate campaign for it. Many of you mentioned this topic while we were in the US, and we are so excited about the interest. We are looking for not only funding, but for individuals or groups that would partner with us in planning, designing, and overseeing the project. If you or someone you know would want more information on how to be apart of this campaign, please email us and we will keep you updated. We will also continue to update you on this campaign via our regular newsletter.

Glory Reborn Online

Many of you know about our website and maybe even some of you know that you can receive your newsletter via email, but did you know that you could also partner with Glory Reborn online via Twitter and Facebook?

While Facebook has some security issues that they are working on, it has been an amazing success for Glory Reborn. Through the Causes application, we have not only raised awareness about our Cause, but we have also raised over $10,000 in 2009! We are developing and working on updates to include on Facebook and Twitter and encourage you to partner with us on these platforms and share Glory Reborn with your friends!

Reality versus Ideals

At Glory Reborn, we see a majority of patients who have no other options during their pregnancy. Some come to us happy and jubilant, others come to us in tears and in dire situations. We are here to provide them with tangible healthcare that they can rely on, and for the majority of our patients, we try to give them at least a glimmer of hope before they leave.

We do however have limitations on the care that we can give and therefore we are caught in the reality of the developing world. In an ideal world, these women would have access to high-quality, affordable healthcare when they need procedures that we cannot provide. In this real world, they can only afford to be treated at the public hospital, which provides the best they can, however it is sub-par care. On a daily basis, we often have to deal with these situations and make decisions that involve the lives of our patients in the frustrating gray area between ideals and reality. We had one such situation this week.

A mom name Johna came to us during her pregnancy and was happy to be at Glory Reborn, however during her labor this past Friday we learned that the baby’s heartbeat showed decelerations below the normal range. This was manageable if there would be an improvement. However after close monitoring at the clinic there was not an improvement, so she needed to be transported. Hilary was with her and she called me and said, “David, we have this situation, what should we do?”. Which basically meant that we had to make a decision from the gray area, do we just let the hardship of reality take affect and have a negative outcome. Or do we intervene and hope that the patient as well as our charity program could cover the cost. Quite literally this mom’s and baby’s lives were in our hands, and a decision had to be made. We decided to go with our ideals and had the patient admitted to the private hospital. The family said they would try to pay and our doctor would not charge us, and we have a memorandum of understanding with the hospital in which all of our patients will get a discount.

Johna had a cesarian section and she was stable. However, after birth, the doctors noticed some problems with baby Kyle. He was quickly rushed intoBaby Kyle in the hospitalthe NICU, and his life was being supported by a ventilator. After an extensive workup he was diagnosed with a congenital pulmonary abnormality that was life threatening. Tragically, in spite of the best care that the doctors and hospital could provide, Kyle passed away Saturday night. Sometimes, even when we chose ideals, the reality still overwhelms the situation.

We share this story with you to give you a little glimpse into the situation that we face daily at Glory Reborn, but also a real glimpse the situation of Johna and a chance to respond. She has been through quite a bit, and our social worker and counselors are visiting her daily. She and her parents have raised as much money as they can, and we would like to ask for you help with this situation. After all the discounts and pro bono work from our doctor, due to Kyle’s complications the total due is nearly $2,500.00 We would like to share this financial burden with our patient, and would like to see if you would partner with us and with Johna in this very real and practical way.

Glory Reborn August 2009 e-News

Year Six Comes to a Close. Over 1,750 healthy babies.

This has been a devastating month for the Philippines and a very busy month for Glory Reborn. As we celebrated our 6th year clinic anniversary with 1750 deliveries it couldnt have been more perfect that my patient Alona delivered her baby boy as we celebrated. Alona was the first patient I ever helped to deliver back in 2000. Her oldest daughter is 9 years old! I cant believe how time flies. I also had the joy of delivering her second daughter in 2004 and now as we celebrated six years of existence as Glory Reborn I had the privilege of delivering her baby boy!

The timing couldnt have been more wonderful as I reminisced over all the infants we have delivered and all the mothers we have gotten to know, Alona certainly stands out in my mind. The closing of this sixth year also brought about the hiring of two new social workers. We are very excited about continuing to reach the women who are desperate for medical attention in Cebu City. So it was with great excitement, and two additional staff members, that we welcomed year number seven for Glory Reborn and praised Jesus for His faithfulness over the past six wonderful years. We want to thank each of you for being a part of saving many, many precious lives and we look forward to all that year seven will bring….perhaps a new building?!?

Floods

As many of you probably know September was a devastating month for the northern islands of the Philippines with two typhoons flooding most of the capitol city and its surrounding areas. Glory Reborn was eager to help the victims of this devastation and together with our local church collected over 400 boxes of clothing and supplies. We were proud to be the first crate of supplies to be sent out of Cebu to reach our neighbors in Manila. As we saw the Asia-Pacific region be devastated by the the flooding in Manila, the earthquake in Indonesia and the tsunami in the Samoan Islands we are thankful for the safety that we have here in Cebu and the protection of a God who truly sees each and every one of us.

Building & Property

As many of you know, we have been looking for land to expand the clinic facility. This past month we have had some exciting appointments and have actually seen an amazing piece of land, that has some amazing potential. It is very near to the current clinic and in the area where we have been looking. We are still in the initial stages of this project, and will be meeting the owners to discuss the potential further. We did want to let you know about this, because its never too early to give towards the building and property fund. The proceeds from the Holiday Card fundraiser will also go directly to the Building fund.
We also have a wonderful opportunity in November to have a fundraising event here in Cebu City. We are very excited about the event and are looking forward to partnering with additional local professionals, corporations, and organizations to further our project.

Help Glory Reborn win $50,000

Promote Healthy Pregnancy & Childbirth is in America’s Giving Challenge – Let’s win $50,000!

Hi everyone,

Our cause just entered in America’s Giving Challenge, which gives us a chance to win $50,000!

Please donate today: Glory Reborn – Causes

To win, between now and November 7th we have to get the most donations to our cause (every person can donate once per day and have it count as a unique donation). We can also win daily awards of $1,000 and $500 if we can get the most people to donate in any 24-hour period. The great thing about this Challenge is that it doesn’t matter how much you give, but instead how much you do to encourage friends and family to get involved in our cause. We all need to come together and start promoting the cause if we want to win.

Each of us has tons of friends on Facebook who we can ask to donate to our cause. But let’s think big toocan you put our cause in your email signature, can you throw a party and get people to donate through the cause when they enter, can you organize other people to go out and fundraise from all of their friends? As you reach out to your friends be sure to tell them why this cause matters to you. The possibilities are endless so let’s talk about what we can do to win on the Wall of the cause or by replying to this bulletin.

July 2009 e-News

Medical Outreach

Taking our services outside of the clinic.
This past month our clinic had the pleasure of joining with a local church and a ministry of doctors to offer free medical check ups to more than 500 families living in the Cebu City area. David and I were honored to be part of organizing and participating in the event. It started out as a simple idea by a doctor in our church to gather all the medical professionals in the church and unite together to use our skills to reach other pastors in our city who are in need. As the idea grew, medical professionals from within the church and community alike began to unite and we soon needed a larger facility to hold this medical outreach in. In the back of the church was a large warehouse and so, over the course of several weeks it began to be converted into a small triage center. Soon we had bathrooms, a small kitchen area, a sound system and booth, flooring, air-conditioning, a kids area, a patio, and then medical stations/rooms. There were stations for dental care, eye exams, minor surgeries, pediatric check ups, family medicine, OB-GYN check ups and even a pharmacy! With the Glory Reborn exam tables, ultrasound machine and buckets of equipment we began treating hundreds of women in the OB-GYN station. Partnering with our three doctors, as well as volunteer doctors for the event, we were able to give complete cervical and breast cancer screening, ultrasound scanning to each woman that needed it, biopsies, health teachings on womens issues, vitamins for everyone and counseling. The families that came were so thankful for the free screening and medicine and we all enjoyed every moment to improve our skills and bless others in need. It was very rewarding for our staff to join together and serve other women outside of the clinic and to partner together with many other medical professionals who share our heart to serve. For most of these women this was their first time to have a full check up/screening of this type, and for many the first time to see their baby on ultrasound. It was very impacting all around to move outside of the walls of the clinic and unite together for the health of Cebuanos in our city. Glory Reborn was even asked to join with the doctors organization again for future events and we have willingly accepted! Oh what joy there is in giving a tangible, practical hope and help to your neighbor in need.
Youth Team
This summer, Glory Reborn also took on its biggest team of visitors to date. Kings Kids El Paso, TX brought a group of 18 to serve along side of us for nearly three weeks. In another outreach to the local community Glory Reborn partnered with the El Paso youth and the citys poorest neighborhood to offer our medical services and message of hope. Just a few kilometers away from the clinic is the community of sea gypsies know as the Badjao. Many of you have heard me mention these women in previous letters but this summer Glory Reborn was able to make a more solid relationship with this community. By partnering with the government entities working in the Badjao community, we have developed a pregnancy and delivery program that caters directly to these poorest of the poor women. We have enrolled several of them into our program with special privileges and hope to change the maternal death rate in this area of the city where it is currently the highest. These women are hesitant to seek medical care due to cultural beliefs and a lack of income. We are excited to be working with the government and with the indigenous peoples of this area. Together with the El Paso youth, we also distributed school supplies and bags to a “school” that has started in this Badjao community. By “school” I mean a bamboo hut on stilts over the largest area of sea water mixed with sewage one can imagine. The kiddos were so eager to receive their supplies and bags and have an afternoon of games and fun with a room full of Americans! We were just happy that the school on stilts held up with all the jumping kiddos and additional people. God was good! The youth also got to minister along side a friend of ours who serves in the dumpsite where thousands of families live. Overall it was a successful trip of service to local Cebuanos and we were happy to see this next generation of youth catch the heart and vision to serve those in need around them. Thank you to all the youth and leaders who came we appreciate all of you!

Challenges
Although this month has been full of beautiful babies and connections within our community, it has also highlighted the harsh realities of poverty and the lack of sufficient health care in the Philippines. In the past week we had a baby born with a cardiac defect who will need to seek surgery outside the Philippines. We also transfered a mother to the overcrowded city hospital where she did not receive a cesarean section for over 12 hours and her baby did not survive. In the same week a previous patient of the clinic was murdered by her husband, who also died in the tragedy. We are currently helping the family and assisting with the baby that was left behind. While these situations have broken our hearts, we continue to believe that there is a greater hope for the nation of the Philippines and we hold onto the anchor of our soul, Jesus Christ. We know that though the realities around us can be overwhelming, there is still a tangible hope that is living through us and in us for Cebu City; in the hearts of each mother we reach and in the medical system itself. Thank you for your prayers and support as we believe for tangible change in hearts and the medical system around us.

Success
We want to thank each of you for your continued support of Glory Reborn Clinic. Great things are happening in the clinic and through the staff. We have made some amazing connections locally and are excited to tell you that this October Glory Reborn will hold a fund raising dinner locally in Cebu City. We are blessed to have friends who want to share our vision with those in the local community. We are specifically hoping to gain connections and raise support for our much needed new building. After seeing just how many moms and babies we can possibly fit into a three bedroom apartment the organizers of the event are determined to help us get into a place of our own. We are so thankful for their determination and willingness to help make a fund raiser locally possible. This one time event will come along side of each of your faithful donations to help make the vision of a larger facility possible for Glory Reborn. With a more complete facility Glory Reborn will be able to host more complex cases and avoid the hospital situation where inadequate care is given. Thank you for being part of changing the health care available in Cebu!
